Jim teaches private blacksmithing classes at his Sonoma Coast shop. A 5-day course in Fundamental Blacksmithing is available for $600 including all materials. Classes are scheduled to fit students' time available.
FUNDAMENTAL BLACKSMITHING teaches the student safe use of the tools, proper working methods, and a wide range of blacksmithing skills. You make your own tool kit for forging, including chisels, punches, tongs, screw driver, scribe, fire tending tools, as well as BBQ implements, leaves, simple flowers, scrolls, hooks and simple animal heads and gate hardware. You learn all you need to know to begin forging on your own and you develop the foundation skills necessary for more advanced work.
You learn to draw out steel, twist, bend, upset, split, fuller, swage, forge weld and rivet. You may learn to forge from both the propane forge and the coal forge. You learn the proper way to set up and use an anvil. And you learn the right way to handle a hammer for hours at a time without undue fatigue or damage to the body. We work hard, have FUN and you take home a LOT of completed projects you will use for years to come.
